HARE’S CHASE Wins Best Australian Red at 2026 Mundus Vini

HARE’S CHASE Wins Best Australian Red at 2026 Mundus Vini

Barossa Valley winemaker HARE’S CHASE has been awarded the Best in Show Trophy for Australian Red Wine for their 2022 ‘Hare & Hound’ Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz at the prestigious international wine competition Mundus Vini. Held in Germany, Mundus Vini is highly regarded as one of the world’s premier international wine tasting competitions.

The Hare’s Chase winery sits on the crest of a hilltop encircled by prized vineyards in the Marananga sub region of the Barossa Valley. The landscape here defines the character and pedigree of the wines  - deep in colour, generous in flavour and true to the art of craft winemaking and the classic Barossa Valley style.

“Each Hare’s Chase wine delivers famously on the flavour promise that has made Barossa Australia’s favourite wine region and Barossa Shiraz a global icon of Australian wine” said award-winning winemaker Matt Reynolds. “But rather than fall into step and follow familiar formulas, as true artisans we chose our own path. Having the courage and willingness to explore, experiment and continually push the boundaries. Creating hand crafted wines true to the character of our Marananga vineyards, showcasing pure fruit expression and elegant structure.”

Success at the 2026 Mundus Vini Wine Competition follows on from recent wins for ‘Red Wine Producer of the Year’ and ‘Shiraz of the Year’ for Hares’s Chase at the 2025 USA Sommeliers Choice Awards. These multiple international awards provide an excellent form guide to this emerging star which is fast becoming the name to watch in Barossa wine.

The 2022 Hare’s Chase ‘Hare & Hound’ Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Shiraz, the wine celebrates the Australian winemaking tradition of combining these two classic varieties to produce a deeply coloured, finely structured and robustly flavoured red wine.

“This is our first vintage release of the Hare and Hound. The name seemed apt, derived from the saying ‘run with the hares and hunt with the hounds’. A nod to our ambition to allow both components of this classic Australian style to shine, whilst also showcasing the balance, poise and generosity of flavour achieved through the art of blending” said Matt. “The 2022 vintage is widely regarded as one of the Barossa’s finest years for red wines. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Shiraz, the wine displays both classic Cabernet and Shiraz varietal characters, whilst also presenting as a seamless, harmonious expression of the classic Barossa style we aim to present. The Cabernet brings structure, poise and length, and the Shiraz delivers richness, fullness and complex fruit characters to the mid palate. A classic each way bet, this wine would be perfect to enjoy this evening, or cellared for 15 years or more.”
