[2003 SHIRAZ]
Robert Parker
" This big, rich, full throttle Shiraz boasts a smoky perfume of melted asphalt, creme de cassis, pepper, and background wood. A deep, sweet, full bodied entry is followed by a surprisingly streamlined, elegant wine with loads of flavour in addition to good finesse and harmony. It should age gracefully for a decade" 92 points
James Halliday
"Dense colour, medium to full bodied; supple, rich blackberry fruit and chocolate; well handled oak" 92 points
Colour
Black Cherry, Satsuma Plum.
Nose
Spicy Ripe Shiraz, some sweet vanillin oak and crushed black pepper.
Palate
This vintage of our Shiraz is characterised by blackberry and raspberry fruits and shows elegance and length.
General
The 2003 vintage was dominated by drought conditions in the Barossa that had significant impacts on tonnage, decreasing intake by 10%-50% in some cases. Very hot conditions early in the season in tandem with small crops led to early and rapid ripening. (A rain event over February 19 and 20 caused significant berry splitting but we were fortunate to avoid this due to our grapes being some of the first to ripen in the Barossa.)
The 2003 wine is the first of our wines to incorporate Viognier which we coferment with our Shiraz. Even at a relatively low level (of 1.5%) this white grape contributes to the perfume and structure of the wine, complimenting our goal of showing the inherent richness and fruit of Barossa Shiraz with true style and elegance.
